Chronically Online — also known as Extremely Online or Terminally Online — is a slang term describing someone who spends so much time on the internet that they become out of touch with the real world. They put precedence on online interactions over real-life ones, believing things that affect online culture have a comparable effect on offline culture — even when they don't.
The term "extremely online" has been used since at least 2014 on Twitter. "Chronically online" followed around 2016 and was defined on Urban Dictionary in 2021 as: "Someone whose entire existence revolves around being on the internet, with no real friends IRL, starting useless debates that achieve nothing outside of a screen." It blew up on TikTok in August 2021 when users started sharing the most chronically online takes they'd ever seen.
